"Sin for breathing"
by Gordon Purkis

Fire is air’s evil twin
and I am your brother.

Smoke is a vandal.
I am your caterwaul,

carrying through the
indomitable night.

I know, I know
we sin for breathing.

"Serpent"

You pierce my heart
with your thighs

Stab my insides
with your pointed heels

Thunderous heels

Nightmare shade of black

We’ve devolved—
our once fluent speech
has become grunts and groans

I’m afraid we’ve made an awful mess of things
